Naperville, IL. The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce officially welcomed Code Ninjas at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 22 from 4:30- 5:30 at the Code Ninjas learning center at 1305 S. Naper Blvd. Code Ninjas serves the local area by teaching children computer coding and problem-solving skills while having fun building video games.
Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico and Congressman Sean Casten along with several ambassadors from NACC welcomed Code Ninjas to Naperville.
Code Ninjas opened its doors on June 1 and trains a steadily growing base of students – known as “ninjas” – who filled summer camps and enroll in flexible drop-in learning. Naperville children ages 7-14 visit the Code Ninjas center to learn how to code in a fun, safe, and social learning environment where gaming is celebrated and STEM is cool.
The Naperville location is owned and operated by entrepreneurs and married couple Kalyan Anandula and Preethi Kundoor. Having a background in technology and application development, Kalyan and Preethi were looking for STEM related activities for their children and found Code Ninjas offered the perfect social and educational atmosphere. Seeing the need for STEM education in the Naperville area, Kalyan and Preethi decided to open a center of their own. The couple is on track to open a second Code Ninjas center in Wheaton this fall.
“We saw the need for coding education in youth academics and we want to help local children think critically and spread our technology experience with them,” said Kalyan. “While everyone consumes technology, very few understand how it functions and we want to change that. The future relies on technology and Code Ninjas will teach children skills that will help them for possible careers.”
Everything about Code Ninjas is built around fun, which keeps kids coming back. But the center also provides the results that parents are looking for, as their children gain coding and problem-solving skills they’ll need for the jobs of the future. Code Ninjas accomplishes this with a robust, game-based curriculum made up of nine belts, just like martial arts. The curriculum is self-paced, but not self-taught; kids get immediate help and encouragement from assistants called Code Senseis and fellow students as they advance from white to black belt. The program keeps kids motivated with little wins along the way, and “Belt-Up” celebrations where they receive color-coded wristbands to mark their graduation to the next level. By the time a child finishes the program, they will publish an app in an app store.
Code Ninjas founder and CEO David Graham is a professional software developer who previously owned a successful chain of coding camps for adults. After numerous inquiries from parents, Graham realized there was an unmet demand to teach children coding skills. He launched the Code Ninjas brand in 2016.
“Parents want their children to learn the critical skills that they’ll need in the future, but it also has to be fun for kids. Code Ninjas has found that sweet spot where kids have fun and parents see results, and we’re truly excited to bring our unique concept to Naperville and surrounding communities,” said Graham.
