maker, Mr. Sam Pitroda has over 50 years of experience in the arena of information and communications technology-related developments both nationally and internationally.
Mr. Pitroda is credited with laying the founding stone for India’s telecommunications and technological revolution that began in the 1980s. He was a leading campaigner who helped in bridging the global digital drive. As an
Advisor to the then Indian Prime Minister, Sri Rajiv Gandhi, Mr. Pitroda led nearly six technology missions that were
related to telecommunications, water, literacy, immunization, dairy, and oil seeds production. He is also the Founding Chairman of India’s Telecom Commission. In all these multiple roles, Sam Pitroda has helped in revolutionizing
India’s developmental philosophies and policies by focusing on providing better access to technology so as to bring about social change.
In order to induce the second phase of India’s Tech Revolution, in the year 2005, Sam Pitroda headed India’s National Knowledge Commission till 2009. In doing so, he was able to provide a blueprint of reform for knowledge-related
institutions and Indian infrastructure in the 21st century.
In addition to this, recently, Mr. Pitroda served as the Advisor to the then Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Public Infrastructure and Innovation, with the rank of a Cabinet Minister. He also served as the Chairman of the Smart Grid Task Force, as well as the committees to reform public broadcasting, modernize railways, deliver e-governance, and other developmental activities.
Mr. Pitroda is a Founding Chairman of five non-profit organizations including the India Food Bank, the Global Knowledge Initiative, and the Institute of Transdisciplinary Health. He is also a founding Commissioner of the United Nations Broadband Commission for Digital Development and Chairman of the International Telecommunication Union’s m-Powering Development Board which aims to empower developing countries with mobile technology.
Moreover, Mr. Pitroda has launched a number of organizations in the United States. He holds around 20 honorary Ph.Ds, close to 100 worldwide patents, has published five books and numerous papers and delivered a number of
key lectures in prominent institutes around the world.
Mr. Sam Pitroda has also contributed to India’s foreign and domestic telecommunications policies. He is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the telecommunication revolution in India
