400 kilometers away from Earth; celebrating the New Year 16 times, Sunita Williams' unique celebration.
Sunita Williams will celebrate the New Year 16 times in space. Currently, there are 72 people in space, including Sunita. As they orbit the Earth, they witness 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day. Therefore, when the calendar turns to January 1, 2025, astronauts orbiting the Earth 400 kilometers away will experience the New Year 16 times.
Sunita arrived in space in June 2024. She and her colleague, who had left Earth aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft for an eight-day mission, were stranded due to technical issues. It is expected that Sunita will return to Earth in March 2025.
