Families, and sponsors.

Along with her, Dr. Vijay Maurya assumed charge as the BOT, Chair. Dr. Krishan Kumar as the President-Elect; the Vice Chair of AAPI is Dr. Sreeni Gangasani. Dr. Soumya Neravatla is the Secretary of AAPI, and the Treasurer for 2026-27 is. Dr. Raghu Lolabhattu.

A Leader Guided by Service, Unity, and Heritage

As the incoming President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Dr. Meher Medavaramstands at the helm of the largest ethnic medical organization in the United States — an institution built on four decades of excellence in patient care, medical education, research, advocacy, and global health.

Her journey is shaped by gratitude to the nation that embraced her and the heritage that formed her. As she stated during a powerful address during the convention immediately after taking charge as the President of AAPI representing over b120,000 physicians and Fellows of Indian Origin in the United States.

“This great nation welcomed us, believed in us, and gave us the privilege to serve. As physicians of Indian origin, we pursued the American dream while caring for the well‑being of its people — and for this, we remain forever grateful.”

A proud Telugu daughter and a proud American physician, she embodies the dual identity that defines AAPI’s strength. Her leadership is rooted in humility, service, and an unwavering commitment to unity: “Our diversity is our heritage. Our unity is our strength. Our service is our legacy.”

A Vision Grounded in Advocacy and Action

Under her leadership, AAPI continues to elevate its voice in national healthcare policy. She champions physician participation in legislative advocacy, reminding members: “Do not ask what AAPI can do for you. Ask what you can do for AAPI.”

She called upon every physician to dedicate one day each year to join AAPI’s Legislative Day in Washington, D.C., ensuring that policymakers hear directly from those who care for America’s patients.

Her collaborative work with the American Medical Association (AMA) strengthens AAPI’s national influence. She honors partners such as AMA President Dr. Willie Underwood and Past President Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, urging AAPI members: “Don’t just practice medicine — help shape its future. Stand together to protect our profession and advocate for our patients.”

Champion of Global Health and Humanitarian Service

Her presidency marks a transformative chapter for the AAPI Global Visionary Initiative Foundation, a platform empowering physicians to lead impactful projects across India and beyond — from HPV vaccination and prosthetic limb donation to cancer screening, CPR training, suicide prevention, and children’s education.

She reminds members that even small acts can create lasting change: “Behind every initiative is a physician with passion who chose to make a difference.”

“A $20 donation can provide an HPV vaccine and save a life. A $30 donation can give someone a prosthetic limb. A $100 donation can fund 50 mammograms for women who would otherwise never be screened.” Her commitment to expanding the South Asian stem cell registry reflects her belief in community responsibility and lifesaving action.

AAPI’s Future: Stronger Together

Her vision for AAPI is bold, inclusive, and forward‑looking: “Our senior leaders built AAPI. Our generation must strengthen it. The next generation must inherit it stronger than we received it.” With unity in purpose and service in action, she calls upon every member to help write the next great chapter in AAPI’s history.

She concluded with the timeless message of cultural pride: “Wherever life may take you, whatever honors you may receive, never forget your motherland and uphold the dignity of your heritage.”

With her new role, Dr. Meher Medavaram stands poised to guide AAPI into a new era defined by unity, transparency, and purposeful action. With more than 35 years of clinical experience, decades of organizational service, and a leadership philosophy rooted in integrity and collaboration, she brings both depth and clarity to one of the most influential physician associations in the United States.

“My vision is to lead with unity, integrity, inclusion, and purpose,” she says—an articulation that captures both her personal ethos and her strategic priorities for AAPI.

A Career Built on Excellence, Education, and Community Service

Dr. Medavaram’s medical journey began at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, one of India’s premier institutions. After immigrating to the United States, she completed her residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago, where she later served as faculty and Assistant Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. Her early years in academic medicine shaped her enduring commitment to mentorship and education.

“Teaching and mentoring are not separate from patient care,” she reflects. “They are extensions of our responsibility to build a stronger and more compassionate healthcare system.”

Dr. Meher Medavaram currently holds several key leadership roles across the Chicago region, reflecting her broad clinical, administrative, and academic influence. She serves as President of Naperbrook Medical Center, Former Medical Director of the Mount Sinai Hospital FAQH Center, and Medical Staff Physician Department of Family Medicine at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Edward Endeavor Hospital and University of Chicago Bolingbrook Hospital while also contributing to medical education as a Clinical Preceptor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work spans underserved communities, academic institutions, and private practice—giving her a uniquely comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing physicians and patients alike.

Four Decades With AAPI: A Legacy of Commitment

Her professional journey reflects not only a steadfast commitment to patient care, but also an unwavering dedication to mentoring future physicians, advancing healthcare equity, and building cohesive professional communities. As she prepares to assume one of the most influential leadership roles within AAPI, Dr. Medavaram embodies a forward-looking vision rooted in collaboration, integrity, and purposeful leadership.

Dr. Medavaram’s association with AAPI has spanned her entire professional career. She joined as a patron member in the 1980s and has since held nearly every major leadership position—Regional Director, Secretary, Vice President, President‑Elect, and notably, the only female Convention Chair in AAPI’s history.

Her leadership philosophy is grounded in humility and responsibility.

“Leadership is not about titles—it is about responsibility, accountability, and the willingness to work together for the greater good,” she emphasizes.

Her long tenure within AAPI has given her a deep understanding of the organization’s strengths, its internal dynamics, and the evolving needs of its membership.

AAPI at a Crossroads: The Need for Unified, Purpose‑Driven Leadership

AAPI represents more than 120,000 physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students of Indian origin—one of the most influential medical diaspora groups in the world. Indian‑American physicians care for one in every seven patients in the United States, a statistic that underscores the community’s impact on national healthcare delivery.

Yet, like many large organizations, AAPI faces challenges: generational divides, governance debates, and the need for stronger alignment across chapters and specialty groups. Dr. Medavaram acknowledges these realities with clarity and candor.

“Our diversity is not a weakness—it is our greatest strength,” she says. “We are united by a shared commitment to medicine and service.”

Her presidency aims to strengthen that unity through transparent governance, collaborative leadership, and renewed engagement with members at every level.

HER STRATEGIC VISION FOR AAPI

1. Strengthening Organizational Unity and Collaboration

One of her foremost priorities is fostering cohesion across AAPI’s vast network of local chapters, alumni associations, specialty societies, and international partners.

“AAPI’s strength lies in its collective voice,” she explains. “We must work together—respectfully, constructively, and with a shared purpose.”

She emphasizes the importance of bridging generational and ideological divides, ensuring that senior leaders, mid‑career physicians, and young professionals all feel represented and valued.

2. Empowering the Next Generation of Physicians

Dr. Medavaram is deeply committed to mentorship and leadership development. She sees AAPI’s Young Physicians Section (YPS) and Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows Section (MSRF) as essential to the organization’s future.

“We must empower young physicians, residents, fellows, women leaders, and medical students through mentorship and leadership opportunities,” she says.

Her plans for AAPI include structured leadership pathways, expanded mentorship programs, and greater visibility for emerging leaders.

3. Advocacy for Physicians and Patients

AAPI has long been a voice for Indian‑American physicians on issues ranging from immigration and IMG equity to physician wellness and healthcare reform. Dr. Medavaram intends to strengthen this advocacy.

“AAPI will continue to advocate strongly for physicians and patients on important healthcare issues affecting our profession and communities,” she affirms.

Her priorities center on strengthening the physician workforce and improving patient care, with a focus on addressing physician burnout and mental health, advocating for fair immigration policies for International Medical Graduates, advancing healthcare access and equity, and expanding support for rural and underserved communities, reflecting her commitment to both physician well‑being and broader public health needs.

4. Expanding Community Outreach and Global Health Initiatives

Community service has always been central to AAPI’s mission. Under her leadership, the organization will expand preventive health programs, health fairs, public education campaigns, and global health partnerships.

“We will continue to expand community outreach programs including preventive health initiatives, health fairs, public education, and global health partnerships,” she says.

Her vision includes deeper collaboration with local organizations, international NGOs, and diaspora networks.

5. Ensuring Transparency, Accountability, and Professionalism

Dr. Medavaram is clear about the leadership culture she intends to model.

“I hope to bring a leadership style that is transparent, accessible, respectful, and action‑oriented,” she says.

She expects the same from AAPI’s leadership team. “From our leaders, I expect collaboration rather than division, constructive dialogue rather than personal differences, and professionalism in both conduct and communication.”

Her emphasis on governance reform reflects her belief that trust and transparency are essential to AAPI’s long‑term success.

A Leader Guided by Values, Mentorship, and Humanity

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Medavaram speaks warmly of the mentors who shaped her—Dr. Somaraju during medical school and Dr. Arthur Cipola during residency. She enjoys reading, music, and travel, grounding her leadership in balance and personal reflection.

Her message to AAPI members is both unifying and inspirational:

“If we stay focused on our shared mission—to serve physicians, support our communities, and promote excellence in healthcare—there is nothing we cannot achieve together.”

As she prepares to assume the presidency, Dr. Meher Medavaram brings a rare combination of experience, humility, and strategic clarity. Her leadership promises not only continuity of AAPI’s mission but a renewed emphasis on collaboration, mentorship, and purposeful action.

Her closing words capture the spirit of her vision: “Together we have the ability to make a lasting impact in medicine, education, advocacy, and humanitarian service.”

With a career spanning more than three decades, she brings a rare combination of clinical expertise, academic involvement, organizational leadership, and community engagement to her role as the incoming President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) for 2026–2027. With her at the helm, AAPI enters its next chapter with confidence, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose.
