Student accused of sexual assault cleared by judge

A judge has cleared a University of Illinois at Chicago student accused of sexual assault who told authorities he was attempting to re-enact scenes from the film “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Mohammad Hossain allegedly attacked another student last month during a sexual encounter in his dorm room. On Thursday, Cook County Circuit Judge Peggy Chiampas determined not enough evidence existed in the case after a preliminary hearing in which the alleged victim testified.

The 19-year-old Hossain allegedly bound and gagged the woman, and then covered her eyes with a knit cap. It was also alleged Hossain struck the woman with a belt and his fists, despite pleas for him to stop. Prosecutors say Hossain had previously been intimate with the woman.

Hossain, a medical student, was being held in lieu of $500,000.

According to a report in DNA, Chiampas told Hossain, “This doesn't mean this is over," noting that prosecutors could still seek an indictment, in which a grand jury is asked to determine whether there's enough evidence to pursue charges.

But Hossain was free to go, and a previous condition of his bond forbidding him from going to UIC was lifted.

DNA reported that in her testimony at a preliminary hearing, the woman, a 19-year-old freshman chemistry student at UIC, said she met Hossain in a class last fall, and eventually "became friends with benefits,” adding that they had consensual sex four or five times.
