Writer Muttath Varkey’s son Babu Varkey passes away
New York: Babu Varkey Kallukalam (Muttathu) of Rockland County in New York, passed away in Changanacherrry, Kerala. He was on a visit to his native place to attend a marriage in the family. He was 62.
Babu Varkey was the seventh of nine children of the celebrated Malayalam writer the late Muttathu Varkey and his wife, the late Thankamma Varkey. He completed his education from St. Berchman’s (SB) College Changanacherrry and worked as a bank manager at District Cooperative Bank, Kottayam.
In 1999 he migrated to the United States and took up a job at NicePak, Orangeburg. Babu Varkey had a passion for sports. He was very active with multiple non-profit organizations in India.
After leading a fulfilling life, he passed in peace on Sunday, January 29th at St. Thomas Hospital, Chethipuzha, Kerala surrounded by his loving family. Babu Varkey was always willing to listen, provide guidance and aid when needed. Be it a simple smile or an easy laugh he always brightened and lifted the spirits of those around him. While he is no longer with us, Babu’s energy and zest for life will be greatly missed by those who loved him; those that he deeply cared for.
He is survived by his wife, Aesel; children Soumya, Aby, son-in-law Bibin Jacob, grandchild Nathan; his brothers Marcelles, Thomas and sisters, Lillikutty Tommichen and Ruby John as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers Mathew, Joseph, James and sister Leelamma Sebastian.
