Bergen County prosecutor Gurbir Grewal will be the next attorney general of New Jersey
New Jersey Governor elect Phil Murphy, a Democrat, will nominate Bergen County prosecutor Gurbir Grewal as the state's next attorney general, NJ Advance Media reported.
Grewal would be the state's first Indian and first Sikh attorney general.
Grewal was nominated to serve as Bergen County prosecutor in 2013 by Republican Gov. Chris Christie. At the time, Christie praised Grewal's experience as a federal prosecutor and his diverse background. Grewal was the county's acting prosecutor since 2010.
Prior to being Bergen County's top law enforcement officer, he worked as the former chief of the Economic Crimes Unit at the U.S. Attorney's Office under former federal prosecutor Paul Fishman.
He's a past president of the South Asian Bar Association of New York and a member of the New Jersey Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association.
Grewal's nomination will be Murphy's second announceme
nt on who will staff his administration when he takes office on Jan. 16. Murphy previously announced his running mate, former state Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, D-Essex, will serve as commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs as well as lieutenant governor.
