Flydubai Flight Crisis: Cockpit Violence Forces Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia; UAE Opens Investigation
Dubai, October 1, 2026:
A flydubai passenger flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday following a serious security incident inside the cockpit, triggering an international investigation into what caused the mid-air crisis.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion International Airport on September 30. During the flight, an altercation occurred on the flight deck, after which the aircraft made a dramatic descent and transmitted emergency signals before being diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) officially confirmed that a “security incident” occurred aboard the aircraft and that it was brought under control. The agency said some crew members were injured and were taken to a hospital in Saudi Arabia for treatment. (WAM)
Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft initially transmitting the international emergency code 7700, then switching to 7500 — the code used to indicate unlawful interference with an aircraft — before returning to 7700. The aircraft ultimately landed safely in Tabuk. (Flightradar24)
Reuters, citing Israeli officials and accounts from passengers, reported that the co-pilot attacked and stabbed the captain and that the aircraft entered a rapid descent during the confrontation. Passengers and crew members reportedly intervened and helped restrain the co-pilot, while other qualified crew aboard the aircraft helped bring the plane safely to the ground. (Reuters)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co-pilot had apparently attempted to crash the aircraft. However, the motive behind the incident has not been officially established, and UAE authorities have cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed. (Reuters)
In a significant development Thursday, UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered a specialized investigation team to establish the facts, circumstances and motive behind the incident. Investigators have specifically been directed to determine whether the incident was connected to terrorist activity or purpose, or involved prior planning or direction. (Gulf Today)
Flydubai has confirmed that an altercation took place in the cockpit and said crew members travelling aboard the flight intervened to secure the aircraft. The airline stressed that the reasons and motives remain unknown pending the official investigation. (Emirates 24|7)
Despite the extraordinary mid-air emergency, the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia and the passengers were subsequently transported onward.
The incident has raised major questions about cockpit security and aviation safety. For now, however, authorities are making an important distinction: the violent cockpit incident and emergency diversion are confirmed, while claims about terrorism, the co-pilot’s motive and whether the aircraft was deliberately being crashed remain under investigation.
UAE authorities have urged the public and media not to circulate unverified information or pre-empt the findings of the official investigation.
