Financial Adviser Warns Indian Families to Prepare for Tough Economic Times, Urges Three Years of Emergency Savings
Oct 14 :
Indian families are being urged to prepare for possible economic challenges ahead, with prominent financial adviser Muthukrishnan Dhandapani issuing a cautionary message about savings, borrowing, employment and major financial commitments.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on September 29, 2026, the Chennai-based mutual fund distributor, who has also served as an investment adviser to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, advised households to build an emergency fund sufficient to cover three full years of family expenses.
Dhandapani strongly recommended avoiding fresh loans and postponing major long-term financial commitments, particularly purchasing homes or investing in real estate.
He also urged working professionals to remain flexible about employment opportunities, emphasizing that maintaining a steady income should take priority over job titles, positions or preferred roles during uncertain economic conditions.
Dhandapani said he had been cautioning people about potential economic difficulties for the past two years.
However, he clarified that he was not predicting an imminent economic collapse.
According to Dhandapani, economic downturns are part of recurring global cycles, and periods of financial hardship are eventually followed by recovery.
His three-year emergency savings recommendation represents his personal financial assessment, rather than an official government directive or a confirmed forecast of an approaching recession.
The central message of his warning is clear: strengthen financial reserves, minimize unnecessary debt, protect income and prepare for economic uncertainty without panic.
