‘I’m not a travel agent’: Tharoor on Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 21
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor responded curtly on Wednesday when asked about Rahul Gandhi’s latest foreign trip, adding a touch of intrigue to the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition's travel plans and the reluctance of his party colleagues to speak on the subject.
“I am not a travel agent," Tharoor said, adding, "I am here now and mind you, everyone has their own reasons.”
Tharoor said this when reporters caught up with him in the state capital, which he represents in the Lok Sabha.
The pointed response from Tharoor, known for his carefully chosen words, was significant at a time when Rahul Gandhi’s movements have become a subject of political discussion.
Rather than offer an explanation for the Congress leader’s trip, Tharoor chose to distance himself from the question, making it clear that he was not in a position to speak for Rahul Gandhi.
His remark that “everyone has their own reasons” added another layer to the response, leaving the question of Gandhi’s travel plans unanswered while underscoring the individual choices of political leaders.
The exchange also brought the spotlight back on Tharoor, whose public remarks are closely watched for signals about his relationship with the Congress leadership.
His response was brief, but it carried an unmistakable message that he was in Thiruvananthapuram and would speak for himself, not explain the movements of another leader.
Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has often drawn political attention over his domestic and overseas visits.
Such trips can become fodder for political opponents, particularly when they coincide with major political developments or invite questions about the priorities of the party's leadership.
For the Congress, the episode presents a familiar challenge, and questions about its prominent leaders' movements can quickly turn into a political talking point, with every response scrutinised for its implications.
Tharoor, however, offered no further explanation, leaving his two-line response to speak for itself.
In a political landscape where leaders are frequently expected to answer questions on behalf of their colleagues, his message was simple -- Rahul Gandhi has his reasons, and so does he.
